RESULTS of the 20th Annual Cerro Chirripó Race – San Gerardo, Costa Rica

The community of San Gerardo again successfully organized and hosted this annual event together with sponsors and other agencies. And here is the news and some important facts about this year’s race:

192 athletes took part in this 34km race which involves running to the highest point in Costa Rica, and back.
The race started on time at 7a.m. on Saturday February 16th, 2008.

Identical to last year Juan Luis Fallas and Gilberto Calderón took the lead, and along the Chirripó National Park trails they switched lead repeatedly at as La Maquina, Llano Bonito, Barbas de Viejo and Monte Sin Fe.

Some 200 meters before arriving at the Crestones base shelter –the point of return, Juan Luis Fallas sprained an ankle. While he received medical attention, he inevitably lost valuable time.

His brother José Miguel took the lead; however a fall made him lose confidence in his ability to make it back, and José Rafael Rojas got ahead of him.

But, the lead runner lost his advantage only a kilometer from the end and Juan Luis Fallas finished in first place, as he had started.

José Rafael crossed the finish line in San Gerardo with a time of 3:22:43 – 38 seconds behind Juan Luis Fallas who had once again won the Chirripó Race.

A CONTINUACION ALGUNOS DATOS IMPORTANTES DE LA ULTIMA EDICION:

-Un grupo de 192 atletas tomaron parte de los 34 km de esta carrera que consta de un recorrido ida y vuelta hasta el punto más alto del país.El inicio fue puntual a las 7:00 am del día sábado 16 de febrero.

Tal como sucedió el año anterior, Fallas y Gilberto Calderón tomaron la delantera casi desde el propio banderazo de salida.
Una vez dentro del sendero del Parque Nacional Chirripó, intercambiaron posiciones conforme pasaban por sectores como La Máquina, Llano Bonito, Barbas de Viejo y Monte Sin Fe.

Unos 200 metros antes de llegar al punto de retorno en el albergue de Base Crestones, Juan Luis Fallas se dobló un tobillo y, mientras recibía atención médica, perdió minutos valiosos.

Su hermano José Miguel tomó la delantera, sin embargo una caída le restó confianza para descender y José Rafael Rojas se enrumbó hacia la meta teniendo solamente en frente a decenas de atletas que iban todavía camino a la cima.
La ventaja del puntero se fue acortando y, cuando solo faltaba un kilómetro para llegar a la meta, Fallas terminó de forjar su proeza.

Con 3:22:43, José Rafael cruzó la meta en San Gerardo, pero ya era demasiado
tarde: 38 segundos antes, Juan Luis Fallas había ganado otra vez la carrera al Chirripó.
