Programa Bandera Azul Ecologica is a nation-wide program designed to empower communities in the areas of environmental and public health. Volunteers earn the Blue Flag for their community, school, nature reserve or business by ensuring that standards are met for sustainable clean air and water practices, environmental education, recycling, and conservation efforts.

Volunteer with Bandera Azul Ecologica

The community of San Gerardo de Rivas earned the Blue Flag in 2002. Under the direction of the Bandera Azul Ecologica Committee Members, San Gerardo de Rivas has fulfilled the requirements each and every year since then. The San Gerardo School has also earned a flag and, most recently, Cloudbridge Reserve raised its blue flag.

The Blue Flag signifies a community dedicated to adopting and implementing practices that keep our air, water, soil and forests healthy and beautiful. If you’d like to become a part of this effort, become a Friend of Bandera Azul Ecologica!

The Friends of Bandera Azul Ecologica help to fulfill Bandera Azul Ecologica’s mission for a healthy environment. Friends of BAE serve as a resource for special events, fundraising, can-smashing on recycling day and the like. If you’d like to be notified of Bandera Azul Ecologica’s events and projects contact:

“Your trash belongs to you until it decays back into the materials that nourish life. Only then does ownership pass from you back to the Earth again”~anon

SO, WHAT DO WE DO WITH IT?

COMPOST HAPPENS (EVERY DAY)

Anything organic, including paper towels & cardboard, teabags, coffee grounds, fruits and vegetables, even dairy and meat is traditionally composted here in San Gerardo. Many people use the simplest design: dig a hole about 1/2 meter deep near a garden, tree, or in a coffee finca, fill the hole with organics and cover with a layer of leaves or dirt.

TRASH: FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.

If you can’t compost it, reuse it, or recycle it, then it must be cleaned and stored until trash day, 1st WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. Ask your neighbors where you should take your trash on 1st Wednesday morning. Also find our who collects your monthly payment. (500 colones per month covers the cost of transporting your trash to the landfill in San Isidro).

Large items: The Bandera Azul Ecologica Committee organizes and annual collection day for large items. Look for notices at the pulperia.

BLUE ROADSIDE LITTER BINS are designed to discourage littering. They are managed by Bandera Azul Ecologica volunteers Please, please do not use these cans for household trash, plastic diapers, organics, toxics, motor oil or construction garbage.
