Better get used to saying ‘futbol’ since this is Costa Rica’s national sport and Latin America’s passion! Every day you will see players, young and old, enjoying football at the plaza – whether playing or cheering on the team with an ice cold beer from the open window of the Roca Dura Café!

Alternate Sunday’s football tournaments take place between the various communities of the region. Come and cheer on the San Gerardo teams – they are often at the top of their league!

The nearby town of Rivas (between San Isidro de General and San Gerardo) has a turf football pitch and spectator tournaments are frequent. Inquire at your hotel about the next games.

You are always welcome to join in a casual game too – or bring your own football and start one!

As always the competition was keen for this year’s football tournament. Teams from San Gerardo made it through to the semi-finals and – height of excitement – played each other!
