Carrera Chirripo Program 24 – 27 February 2017

This weekend San Gerardo de Rivas hosts its biggest event of the year! The 29th edition of the Chirripo Race or Carrera Chirripo. 14 km of backbreaking running up and then the same down to compete for the prizes and the fame that comes with Costa Rica’s most famous marathon. It’s a great time to visit San Gerardo and participate in a 4 day fiesta that’s full of fun. If you like you can roll up your sleeves and volunteer too! Here are the main events: Friday February 24 4:30 pm – Talent show to elect the Queen of the Fiesta 7:00 pm – Gala dinner (by invitation only) Saturday February 25 7:00 am – Start of the race from the plaza, San Gerardo de Rivas 8:00 am – Family activities and programs about conservation and preventing forest fires 10:00 am – Racers begin to return! 4:00 pm – Prizes awarded 8:00 pm – Disco dance, Community hall. Summer is arriving Chirripo reservations open for spring.

You can feel it in the air! The rains are subsiding and the smell of summer is on the breeze! From mid December to April is for many the best time to visit southern Costa Rica and especially our mountain zone. Gerhard Krolow – Veteran Carrera Chirripó Runner

Gerhard Krolow, affectionately known locally as Don Gerard, died Sunday 10 July, 2016 at 81 years old. Gerhard and his lovely wife Kathy, spent 3 – 4 months every year at their lovely home “Finca Isabella’ in San Gerardo de Rivas where they hosted visitors and locals alike and cultivated and processed their own coffee; but more than anything participated in the Carrera Chirripó. This race – 17 km up Mount Chirripó and 17 km back – is in its 28th year and has become an international event along the same lines as other Ironman challenges. Don Gerhard, a seasoned athlete and competitor, opened up the race to include veterans over the age of 70 and continued to compete 19 times until 2014 when ill health precluded him from entering. He not only competed in the Carrera Chirripó but also joined other mountain runs all over Costa Rica, as he did back home in Canada, winning countless awards. In addition Gerhard was thrilled when his son, Gerhard Junior, joined him in the Chirripó Race. In 2010 at the age of 75 he was still reaching the summit in just 3.5 hours, and finishing below in just 6.25 hours.
